Well, once again I was in my art class learning about perspective. And once again I started to draw a ship, but this time I wanted it to be completely The Flying Dutchman. I started out ok but I was doing it out of my head. After I got home and looked at my zillions of crapy reference pics I realized how far off I was. So I surfed the web several times until I got some more decent ref. pics. And sketched on my 18X24 art pad the Ship in 2 point perspective. This took a couple of Days even staying up late. OH MY HECK That carving on the back is insane! And I only found one decent picture on the entire internet! Anywho After I got it completely drawn i was pleased with it. But since it's on thin cruddy paper I couldn't paint it, pastel wouldn't do the minute details justice and charcle-don't even go there, and I'd just destroy it with colored pencils.
So using masking tape I stuck the thing to my scanner and scanned it in sections 5 times. (This is a huge picture remember). One jump drive ride later I had it on Photoshop reasembling it into one peice which was a huge pain since for some reason things just wouldn't line up! So I began to color and don't even get me started on the reflection!
I have always been so frustrated that you never get a good look at the back of that ship, I really had no idea what that carving was until now. It's freakin morbid! Take a good look cause I went to great lengths to make sure it could be seen clearly. I Tinited the monsters just slightly different colors so they stood apart more. The shadowing killed me on this. I didn't use any special tools it was completely done with the brush tool, stroke by stroke. Got to use some nice tecture brushes.
Had no idea what the carving was on the lower balcony so I used creatice licence and fashioned the swirly wood to mimick that of the organ. Speaking of organ the silhouette you see in the window is from an original picture. I cut out a peice darkened it till it was completely black used a gradient on it then used a masking tool the stick it inside the window. Talk about a pain!

The reflection is made up of 5 different layers.
The sails I drew on a separate document, just drew with the brush tool the little veins then I cpoied it over and distorted it till it fit inside the previously drawn sails on the background. I put shadows on the veins in the sails later. By the way I know the sails are supposed to be tattered but I only realized this after I was 85% done. No going back after that.
I know the little faces on the side don't really glow but I thought it would be cool if they were apart of the Captains quarters so I just added a little light seeping out of their eyes and mouths just for giggles.

And now 2 days of deprived sleep and a headach here it is.
My dad came in and said I was obsessed. I think Passionate is a much kinder word.

Very cool. :)

I tried drawing it once, but it just looked awful. You definitely did it well.

These are the only two back refs I've been able to find: [link] [link]
Thanks, I think I'm going to go into either hybernation or a comma now.

Dreams from the movies
I admire your patience. I believe I would break down crying if I even thought of doing that kind of detail. Oh and I like the sails though they're not 'correct'. It makes the ship look like a living entity. Very amphibian-like.

"Passionate" may be a nicer term, but we're in America, so "obsessed" it is. We speak our MINDS!! (at least we should be able to, but that doesn't always work out, now does it? ;))
Drearie me, WOD, you have touched new ground with this bad boy! (er... ship...) TOTALLY FLIPPIN' SWEET!! My EYES are hurting from just trying to soak in its awesomosity!!
I've only noticed one thing that looks a wee bit odd. The ship seems a little too elongated.
But the reflection looks really cool, I think you did an awesome job on it. The ship is incredibly detailed, too. And the lighting is flippin' sweet. I honestly think any moderatly sane person would lose their mind working on this. Glad to see you've still retained some of your sanity!! ... I hope... :O
About the sails, I think they look better now than if you tattered them. Your drawing doesn't make the ship look as crusty and fishy, so the sails kinda hint at a "pre-transformation" Flying Dutchman.

One last thing:

This is an amazing piece of work... Love how you got all those tiny details, and I bet trying to find good pictures wasn't easy either. I'm going to have to :+fav:
